Having a Para back up every Tech/ECA crew is just stupid! How does that cut the costs? You might as well ditch the ECA, and the Para car, and you'll save a ton of money for no difference in the skill set on scene!

Regards
Nick

As a Paramedic for 10 or so years, i'd have to agree that when ever there was a full moon it did bring an influx of psychi patients,
having said this, such occurances are nothing new ! the word 'lunatic' stems from the early thoughts of the medical profession that the moon did in fact influence a persons behaviour !!

I dont know if it is nationwide, but ECA's have been dubbed locally as 'Technicians Without Any Training' (TWAT's)
It does seem a huge waste of resources, and a money making scheme, without patients needs being thought of.

And it is amazing how many 999 calls to doctor's surgeries come in at about 5:30pm ,i.e. just before the surgery shuts, and then turns out to be a patient so 'ill' that they are able to sit in the waitng room unattended clutching a letter for the hospital.

Assuming both have come out as a Red 3 on AMPDS and it would be impossible to call back for more info because they are 3rd party callers, I'd give the ambulance the call it was closer to, unless there was an ambulance about to become available near that call.

That would be going "by the book", though, inside I'd be hoping the child hit by the car would be the one to get it because everyone knows that "breathing difficulty" calls are often just people with colds!

I would go for the 5 yr old hit by a car. As an EMT-B and a volunteer on a small fire dept. with only 2 ambulances, it would be a very hard decision to make. Either could be very serious or minor, but you always have to think the worst until you arrive at the scene.

Hear Hear.
Recently had a 'Red' call due to an Out Of Hours doctor giving the patient a 'time' for their transport.
They phoned 999, claiming 'unconciousness?!' (asleep) and took the only ambulance in the sector 40 miles out to a hospital!

not sure about other services but in London 999 is the most appropriate number for SJA to ring becacause it will get through quicker than any direct number and also it will go through to someone who can actually create a CAD on the system instead of someone who's just passing by a phone and decides to pick it up!
